WELCOME FROM CLUB CAPTAIN, MARTIN AINSWORTH
I first picked up a golf club as a wee boy of ten years old, not realising how much enjoyment golf would give me later in my life. I’ve now been a member of the club for 23 years, and in that time I’ve been fortunate to form many lasting friendships. I’ve also had the pleasure of watching the course evolve, with changes over the years that have strengthened and improved it greatly.
When I was asked to take on the role of Vice Captain, I took some time to reflect on what that commitment truly meant—especially knowing it could lead to becoming Captain a year later. Ciaran, now our Immediate Past Captain, made a compelling case that I had the right attributes for the role, and his confidence in me played a big part in my decision to accept.
Now that I am installed as Club Captain, I feel genuinely honoured. To serve a club with 130 years of history, tradition, and community spirit is a privilege. We are supported by a fantastic team—both on and off the course—and a team of golf professionals who are second to none.
My goal for the year ahead is simple: to enjoy my captaincy, to enjoy playing golf, and above all to continue enjoying the company of our members. I look forward to sharing a wonderful golfing year with you all.
WELCOME FROM LADIES CAPTAIN, DEBBIE SHAW
When I joined our golf academy back in February 2020, I never imagined that six years later, I would feel so proud and honoured to serve as Ladies Captain of this remarkable golf club, which boasts a history dating back 130 years. We are fortunate to have an outstanding team of professionals who not only offer a warm welcome but also strive to enrich our experiences both on and off the course.
What truly sets this club apart is its fantastic membership. Being part of this community means more than just playing golf; it’s about connecting with fellow members who share similar interests, supporting each other, and building lifelong friendships through our shared passion.
As captains this year, it is a privilege to lead and represent our wonderful golfing community, and we are dedicated to ensuring that this season is just as memorable as the last.
We look forward to an exciting season filled with great golf and unforgettable moments.
Here’s to a successful year—let’s enjoy every moment out on the course!
2026 CHARITIES
This year the Captains' will be supporting two charities that span a generation.
The Alzheimer’s Society is the UK’s leading dementia charity. The funds we raise will give vital support to those who need it and fund ground breaking research.
At Surbiton we hope to raise awareness of how to identify the early signs of dementia and how to support those where dementia touches their lives. It will take a society to beat dementia, and we hope SGC can play its part in achieving this goal.
The Captains are proud to support Great Ormond Street Hospital as their chosen captain’s charity. Having spent some time visiting over the Christmas period of 2025, Martin was deeply impressed by the incredible dedication of the staff and the outstanding quality of care and services they provide. The hospital’s commitment to supporting children and their families in challenging times is truly inspiring, and he is honoured to help raise awareness and support for such a vital institution.
CAPTAINS DRIVE IN
Every year, our current Captains 'putt out' and the new Captains 'drive in'. A big thank you to Ciaran Carvalho, Georgina Headley and Alex Bocquet for their leadership in 2025 as well as their incredible fundraising efforts which saw £50,000 donated to LandAid and Surbiton YMCA. We’re excited to take the helm this year and some highlights of the day can be found below.
