A local resident has asked us to circulate the following which, given our Club’s History, may be of interest to many of us.

“I thought you might like to know that a developer has bought Sir Sydney Camm’s house to demolish it and build four houses. Some locals believe that the house should have enough heritage to warrant some degree of preservation.

As we all know, Sir Sydney Camm was the Chief Designer at Hawker Aircraft from 1926 to 1966, designing over 80% of the RAF’s aircraft from 1920s biplanes, the Hawker Hurricane, Typhoon, Tempest and cold war jets like the Hunter and the truly unique Harrier jumpjet. Most historians would agree that the Hurricane, more than the Spitfire, won the Battle of Britain and the world would be a very different place without it.

If just a few more objections were made to the planning application, there would have to be a public meeting where speakers could present the case of why the house may be important and whether people would like to think about it a bit further rather than automatically grant permission to demolish it. The demolition might still go ahead and whether or not anyone has any particular feelings about the house, at least the community would have had the chance to, ‘Know what you’ve got before it’s gone’.

The objections need be only as simple as, ‘I object’ but it would be more relevant if Sir Sydney, his planes and heritage potential of the site were mentioned. Perhaps something like,’ Sydney Camm’s Hurricane winning the Battle of Britain has given us all the freedoms we have. The heritage of the house should be considered.’……or something like that…

The planning application is at; and search for Planning Application: 2014/3620″
