We are now 2 weeks into the 6 week project installing drainage at holes 5-8.
The weather has been kind, with lots of dry days and very little rain. As a result we are pretty much on schedule. A day was lost when the large trenching machine developed a fault, but we hope to make that up.
Primary drainage has now been installed completely on holes 5 and 8. Primary drainage comprises 5 inch permeable pipes laid 800mm deep and 5m apart. This has meant that we have laid about 2.5 miles of pipework, removed 600 tons of soil which we have to dispose of at sites around the course and then filled the trenches with 600 tons of gravel.
We have also filled in the 2nd bunker on the right of 4th hole to create a larger walk off area from the back of the green. The plan is to enlarge the existing greenside bunker on the front right of the green and add a drain and liner to this bunker to improve playability. This will be done when we begin the bunker renovation project this autumn.
Over the next two weeks we will start to lay primary drainage at holes 6 and 7, fill in the second fairway bunker on the right of 6th fairway and use some of the soil from the drainage to re-profile the area from this bunker toward the green and trees on the course boundary.
We should also start installing the secondary drainage at holes 5 and 8 using gravel banding that runs at 45 degrees to the primary drainage.
Holes 5-8 will remain closed Monday to Friday, but be open for play at weekends.
